What is the difference between vermiculite and perlite? A comprehensive comparison of horticultural growing media

1. Differences in raw materials and production processes

expanded vermiculite

It is made from magnesium aluminum silicate mica raw ore and is expanded at a high temperature of 800-1000°C to form a multi-layered sheet structure with excellent water and fertilizer locking properties. Mainstream specifications: 1-3mm, 2-4mm, 3-6mm, divided into horticulture seedling grade and thermal insulation building material grade. Purchasing needs to distinguish between grades.

expanded perlite

It uses natural volcanic glass rock that is rapidly expanded at a high temperature of 1000-1200°C to form closed porous hard particles. The core advantage is stable breathability and drainage. Popular specifications: 0.5-1mm, 1-3mm, 3-6mm, mostly used for matrix compounding and soil improvement.

2. Comparison of core psychological performance

The physical and chemical differences between the two products directly determine the matrix formula effect and terminal adaptation scenarios. The core parameters are compared as follows:

Appearance: Expanded vermiculite is golden yellow or tan flake-like particles, with a soft texture and a multi-layer sandwich structure; expanded perlite is pure white or off-white irregular hard particles, the particles are compact and hard, without layered structure, and the appearance is highly recognizable.

Water retention performance: The water retention performance of expanded vermiculite is extremely advantageous. Relying on the multi-layer sandwich structure, it can absorb water several times its own weight. It has stable water locking and storage capabilities and can maintain a balanced matrix humidity for a long time. The water retention of expanded perlite is weak, and it can only rely on the surface of the particles to adhere to water slightly. The internal closed pores do not store water, and the water loss rate is fast.

Air permeability: Expanded vermiculite has medium air permeability and good air permeability in short-term use. However, in a planting environment with long-term irrigation and repeated watering, the particles are easily compacted and collapsed, and the air permeability will continue to decay; expanded perlite has excellent air permeability and drainage performance. The particle structure is hard and stable, not easy to deform or collapse, and there will be no hardening problems after long-term use. It has extremely strong breathability stability.

Acid-base PH value: Expanded vermiculite is generally neutral to weakly alkaline, with a pH range of 7.0-9.0. It is suitable for most common green plants, but is not suitable for plants that like strong acidity such as blueberries and azaleas. Expanded perlite has a milder pH, with a pH value between 6.0-7.5. It is slightly acidic to neutral, compatible with most horticultural crops, and has a wider formula adaptability.

Nutrient adsorption and slow-release capabilities: Expanded vermiculite has a high cation exchange capacity and excellent nutrient adsorption, buffering, and slow-release capabilities. It can effectively lock in water and fertilizer, avoid rapid loss of fertilizers or burn seedlings at excessive concentrations, and continue to supply nutrients to plants. Expanded perlite has almost no cation exchange capacity, does not adsorb or store nutrients, and only acts as a physically loose matrix without fertilizer preservation or slow-release effects.

Structural stability and durability: Expanded vermiculite has weak physical toughness and is easily pulverized and broken when exposed to water and fertilizer for a long time. Its structural durability is limited and cannot be reused for a long time; expanded perlite has dual stable chemical and physical properties, is corrosion-resistant, does not decompose, is not easily broken, has strong pressure resistance, and the finished matrix has a longer service life.

3. Inventory of commercial advantages and disadvantages

expanded vermiculite

Core advantages: It has good moisturizing and fertilizer-locking effect, which can improve the survival rate of cuttings and seedlings; it releases trace mineral elements to help seedlings grow; it is light in weight, reduces logistics costs, and is suitable for short-term seedling breeding projects.

Shortcomings of purchasing: long-term watering is easy to compact and powder, and the air permeability is attenuated; it has weak alkaline properties and is not suitable for acidic plant substrates; it cannot be recycled and reused, and is only suitable for short-term cultivation formulas.

expanded perlite

Core advantages: stable drainage and air permeability, effective prevention of root rot and hardening; physical and chemical properties that do not rot or decompose, suitable for long-term potting substrate; mild pH value, strong formula versatility, high terminal repurchase rate.

Shortcomings in purchasing: The ability to retain water and fertilizer is poor, so it cannot be used for seedling cultivation alone; the original product contains dust, so it is recommended to purchase dust-removing and finishing specifications and need to be used with slow-release fertilizer.

4. Accurate procurement and selection scenarios

Priority purchase of vermiculite

Commercial flower and vegetable sowing, cutting and seedling cultivation, greenhouse short-term seedling cultivation, and customized cultivation substrate orders for high moisture requirements.

Prioritize purchasing perlite

High-end substrate for succulents, orchids, and root plants, garden soil improvement, long-term indoor potting, and outdoor planting substrate formulas in rainy areas.

5. Hot-selling matrix ratio plan

·Seedling cutting medium: peat soil: horticultural vermiculite = 3: 1

·Universal potting substrate: peat: perlite: vermiculite = 4: 2: 1

·Special substrate for succulents: high proportion of perlite + granular soil, with a small amount or zero addition of vermiculite

·Greenhouse vegetable and fruit substrate: mainly peat + perlite, with a small amount of vermiculite, adapted to the regional climate as needed

Summary

The core logic of foreign trade procurement: choose vermiculite for seedlings to be moisturizing, and choose perlite for long-lasting breathability. Combined procurement based on the target market climate, planting categories, and customer formula needs can effectively improve the quality and market competitiveness of the finished substrate.
