This Seiryu Stone is a natural limestone used for aquascaping. It features a rugged, steep profile and a dark grey-black body characterized by distinctive white calcite veining. It is available in two versions: untreated (unwashed) and acid-washed.
The stones possess naturally craggy shapes with abundant surface cavities and crevices; each piece is unique. They are widely used for hardscaping freshwater planted aquariums and paludariums, as well as for garden rockeries, dry landscapes, and micro-landscape decorations.
A full range of sizes is currently in stock. The acid-washed version has had surface-soluble calcite removed to mitigate the issue of rising water hardness, and all stones have been rinsed to eliminate loose dust and debris. Bulk orders allow for size selection and private-label packaging.

Why does Seiryu stone harden the water? Does the acid-washed version still cause water hardening?
Seiryu stone is a type of limestone containing calcium carbonate. With untreated (natural) stones, soluble calcium salts on the surface dissolve into the water, raising GH and KH levels. Acid washing removes surface calcium carbonate; while this mitigates the issue, it cannot completely eliminate water hardening. Regular water changes are recommended when keeping soft-water organisms.

How do I choose between natural Seiryu stone and acid-washed Seiryu stone?
Natural stones are suitable for dry garden landscapes and keeping hard-water fish. Acid-washed stones are recommended for planted aquariums and setups housing soft-water organisms.

The stones I received all look different; is this a quality issue?
Seiryu stone is a naturally quarried rock; every piece differs in shape, texture, and the distribution of cavities—these are natural characteristics. While we select high-quality stones, it is impossible to produce two identical pieces.

What are the white crystals forming on the stone's surface?
These are calcium deposits (calcium "frost") caused by calcium carbonate leaching out—a normal reaction when limestone comes into contact with water. They can be removed with a stiff brush and do not affect the stone's properties.

Will the stone weather or deteriorate if placed outdoors?
The stone is hard and durable, making it suitable for long-term outdoor garden placement. Prolonged exposure to rain may cause white calcium deposits to form, which can be cleaned off with periodic brushing.

Can Seiryu stone be buried in soil?
Yes, placing it in soil for gardens or micro-landscapes is perfectly fine. As limestone is slightly alkaline, the vast majority of plants remain unaffected.

Will the sharp edges scratch the aquarium glass?
When placing the stones, use filter wool or gravel underneath to elevate them. Ensure sharp points do not press directly against the glass to avoid impacts or scratches.
