Our hardened perlite is produced from natural volcanic glass ore. The ore is crushed, screened and expanded in a high-temperature kiln, then goes through a secondary high-temperature sintering process. The surface of each grain is fused and hardened into a glassy shell, while the interior keeps a honeycomb porous structure.
Compared with ordinary expanded perlite which is brittle and easy to powder, hardened perlite features significantly higher compressive strength and lower water absorption. It stays structurally stable under long-term watering and repeated use, without caking or collapsing, so the root zone keeps continuous aeration and drainage.
Available particle sizes: 4-8mm, 8-12mm, 4-10mm, 10-20mm. Widely used for Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Cattleya, Oncidium and other orchid potting mix, pot drainage layer, seedling propagation media and greenhouse mass cultivation.
As a chemically inert mineral medium, hardened perlite contains no nutrients, no pathogens and no weed seeds. pH is neutral to slightly alkaline (approx. 7.0-7.5), causing no irritation to sensitive orchid roots. It is typically blended with bark, sphagnum moss, coconut husk or peat to build an ideal air-water balance for orchids.
Small retail bags suit hobby growers. Bulk supply serves orchid farms, nurseries, tissue-culture labs and greenhouse operators. Large-volume orders support custom particle size screening and private-label packaging service.
Appearance features
* Sinter-hardened surface with a vitrified shell
Through a high-temperature secondary sintering process, a dense, hardened layer forms on the surface of each granule. This provides high structural strength, ensuring they do not easily crumble when squeezed firmly by hand.
* Internal porous, honeycomb-like structure
The granules retain the natural micropores of the volcanic minerals, offering a balance between breathability and moderate water-retention capacity.
* Light beige to creamy white tones
These are the natural colors of the minerals. Some granules may appear light yellowish-brown depending on the degree of sintering; no artificial dyes are used.
* Lightweight with low bulk density
Thanks to the porous structure of the volcanic minerals, the granules are lightweight, significantly reducing the overall weight of orchid pots and the potting medium.
* Closed-surface structure with low water absorption
The hardened outer shell limits water penetration into the interior of the granules, allowing excess water to drain away quickly and preventing long-term waterlogging.
* Natural variations are normal
Slight differences in color depth—arising from variations in sintering temperatures and the specific mineral source—are inherent characteristics of natural minerals and do not affect performance.
Advantages
· High strength, resistant to crumbling, and reusable
Featuring a sintered, hardened structure, it remains stable—neither loosening nor collapsing—even with long-term watering. It can be washed and reused after repotting, making it far more durable than standard perlite.
· Excellent aeration and drainage to prevent root rot
A combination of porous, honeycomb-like internal structures and a sealed outer shell allows for rapid water drainage while maintaining essential air channels for the roots, significantly reducing the risk of waterlogging and root rot.
· pH-neutral to slightly alkaline; gentle on roots
With a pH of approximately 7.0–7.5, it can be blended with media like bark or sphagnum moss to create the slightly acidic environment that orchids prefer, ensuring a mild and controllable pH level.
· Resists compaction; prevents pests and mold
As a mineral-based medium, it contains no organic matter. When mixed with bark, it helps inhibit the growth of mold and the proliferation of fungus gnats.
· High tolerance for watering variations
It strikes an ideal balance between water retention and drainage. It is forgiving if you overwater—preventing waterlogging and root rot—and equally resilient if you underwater, as it does not dry out too quickly. This makes it an excellent choice for beginners growing orchids.
